Abstract

In the context of the spatial distribution of the Brazilian population, twenty-three official metropolitan regions can be highlighted among the most important spaces on population concentration, especially the urban parcel. The objective of this article is to analyze the current situation of metropolization of the Brazilian population associated to these spaces, considering the demographic data for the census years of 1991, 2000 and 2010. The results show that the levels of metropolization of the Brazilian population remain remarkably high, but also that the pace of population growth in the major metropolitan areas has declined, and this corresponds to a slowdown in the concentration of population controlled by them.
