Abstract

The age-specific fertility rate of women with 15-19 years old (f1) showed a decline between Brazilian's census of 2000 and 2010, for the first time since the inclusion of the information of children born alive in the last 12 months. The decline was meaningful: about 30%. This phenomenon has an important consequence to Brass P/F ratio: It generate an error in the fertility rate accumulated until de age group 20-24 years old (F2), and, by consequence, a P2/F2 overestimated, which we use to correct the Total Fertility Rate (fertility level) calculated from census. Therefore, our aim is to propose an alternative to the original Brass P/F ratio using the Brazilian census (2010). The results show that the alternative proposed here generated estimates close to the births enumerated in the "Sistema de Informação de Nascidos Vivos" (SINASC/DATASUS). That is an indication that the alternative proposed here is adherent in a fast fertility decline scenario.
