Crecimiento Económico y Concentración Original del Ingreso: Experiencias Internacionales desde 1820

Abstract

De acuerdo con la hipótesis básica de un nueva corriente de análisis del desarrollo económico, el principal determinante de la brecha actual entre el ingreso per cápita de los paises desarrollados y el de los países en desarrollo que fueron colonias europeas es la concentración original de la riqueza, vista tal concentración como un factor que sintetiza la modalidad inicial de colonización y producción.En este documento sometemos a prueba la hipótesis, que llamamos "historicista", de una influencia negativa de la concentración inicial del ingreso en el desempeño posterior de la economía. Para tal propósito partimos de la función de producción agregada convencional y de relaciones hipotéticas entre los motores básicos del crecimiento y variables de concentración del ingreso en un momento inicial y en otros posteriores. Los resultados de ejercicios panel con una muestra de países desarrollados y en desarrollo no rechazan la hipótesis historicista cuando se mide la concentración del ingreso por la participación en éste del decil más rico de la población.
