Quality of life in New Mexico: implications for public policy

Abstract

Preliminary results of a recently completed quality of life survey indicate that New Mexicans are not uniformly satisfied with the quality of their lives. The differences in perceived quality of life by residents of the state's seven planning districts can be related to a variety of physical, social, economic and institutional factors. Some of these factors are the explicit or implicit concerns of public policy and related fiscal activities. This being the case, the value of developing policy oriented measures of quality of life becomes apparent. Welfare weighted quality of life measures which would be of value to decision makers and planners at both the state and regional levels are discussed.
