Abstract

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (ERS) publishes an agricultural balance sheet in the Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector: National Financial Summary each fall. The balance sheet, indicating the economic health of the farm sector, presents estimates of asset and debt values in U.S. agriculture at the national and State levels. To separate farm household statistics from farm business statistics, ERS constructs two estimates of the balance sheet, one including and the other excluding data for farm operator households. ERS constructs these estimates from State data and, when these are unavailable, benchmarks from the census of agriculture and other surveys.
