Edible Soy Protein: Operational Aspects of Producing and Marketing

Abstract

Excerpts from the report: Faced with the question of whether or not to start producing and marketing edible soy protein, several soybean processing cooperatives turned to Farmer Cooperative Service (FCS) for help. Essentially, they each wanted FCS to marshal and analyze the facts. Because the requests were similar, FCS concluded that the prudent approach would be to gather the available facts and prepare a report that would be made available to anyone who wanted it. The contents are grouped under seven major headings. After a brief introduction, the different kinds of soy products, their uses and production and outlets are described. Processes, equipment, capital and processing costs are then treated. Because soy products are being prepared for human consumption, a section is included on current good manufacturing practice. Market growth and market potential are examined next. An appendix section of companies producing and distributing soy products is included for reference.
