Abstract

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar evidências teóricas e empíricas acerca da experiência de reforma agrária e do desenvolvimento no espaço rural do estado do Rio Grande do Norte. Além disso, cabe demonstrar como se dão as relações funcionais em um contexto mais amplo no qual assentamentos rurais e comunidades locais se inserem em mercados, tendo em vista as transformações e impactos resultantes da globalização. À luz das contribuições dos clássicos brasileiros dos anos 1950 e de autores recentes nos anos 1980 e 1990 acerca do debate brasileiro da necessidade da reforma agrária, o objetivo aqui é demonstrar, em seu alcance, qual a contribuição da experiência da reforma agrária desenvolvida no estado do Rio Grande do Norte para a discussão em torno do desenvolvimento rural e local, e quais suas formas de reação e reconfiguração frente aos impactos da globalização neste contexto.
