Abstract

We propose to advance understanding of road impacts on relationships between people and forests in two resource-dependent regions, the southwestern Amazon and north-central Florida. We approach this multifaceted topic by drawing on a complex systems framework, and focusing on the dynamics of socioeconomic, ecological and institutional networks. We will integrate these data for multiple time points in a spatially explicit fashion to compile a database that can provide a better understanding of the complex dynamics of change following infrastructure upgrades. This integrated database will also allow for spatio-temporal modeling to test a number of expectations about complex systems, applied to the case of various shocks brought by new infrastructure to resource-dependent regions. We anticipate that the proposed research will lead to improved design of integrated databases for interdisciplinary environmental research, more robust theory of human-environment interactions, a means of testing of complex systems theory, and practical applications to both study sites.
