Abstract

A pecuária é a principal força motora do desmatamento. Isto é especialmente importante em Rondônia, região de rápida expansão da fronteira agrícola brasileira, localizada no bioma amazônico.--------------------------------------------The State of Rondônia, which is located in Brazilian Amazon, faces the debate between environmental conservation and expansion of the agricultural frontier. This paper aims to help this debate by identifying relationship between deforestation and variables related to land use change in this state. Land use change in Rondonia is illustrated by maps and through a correlation matrix between deforestation and variables which indicate land use such as planted area with the most important crops, cattle herd and the variation of these between 2001 and 2006. There is a strong correlation between deforested area and cattle herd, but there is no correlation between accumulated deforestation and herd evolution in five years. Cattle ranching is the main driving force of deforestation in Rondonia. There is a need for additional studies to improve understanding of factor affecting land use dynamics as well as to contribute for the development of agricultural production systems which reconcile higher income with lower environmental impact. This is especially true for the State of Rondonia, a region of fast expansion of the agricultural frontier in the Amazon Biome.
