Abstract

----------------------------------------------------Based on data of the Agricultural Census, joined to a cartographical basis of soil information for Parana State, Brazil, have been built and interpreted a series of indicators focused on the aim of subsidise the planning and management of intensive livestock production in a local, regional or territorial perspective. This study is divided in two phases, being the first one for determining indicators able to express the situation of the municipalities regarding to relative concentration of different livestock herds, manure production, area used by agricultural activities (crop production and pastures), whereas the second one was for estimation, based on input entries – organic or synthesised fertilizers, feedstuff – and product outputs – livestock and crop sales, of the nutrient balance by municipality considering NPK elements. Maps have been generated to spatially express the local or regional conditions regarding the referred indicators. Despite of some limitations of the estimates which have been pointed out in the study, the generated municipality-level indicators, from both phases of the study, such as stocking rate by annual allowance of manure spreading per area or animal units per available area for annual crops, might be useful for regional economic planning, supporting to interpret the environmental status and therefore to lead the decision taking process of policy makers and private agent.
