CONSTRAINT ANALYSIS AND HYPOTHESIS GENERATION An Example of Systematic Preliminary Investigation

Abstract

In the development of economic models an explorative stage,.com- . prising systematic data analysis without underlying theory, is often omitted due to lacking adequate techniques. This paper illustrates the use of Constraint Analysis for systematic preliminary investigation. As an example the structure is studied of the relations between labour productivity, floorspace productivity and environmental variables of 550 Dutch retailing establishments. It will be shown that Constraint Analysis is indeed a useful technique.
