Abstract

----- Severe outbreaks of powdery mildew may occur in the F.W.I, specially on beans, from december to may. Early attacks reduce the root growth, and control by seed dressing with systemic fungicide is required for susceptible varieties, giving better results than foliartreatments at the onset of symptoms. Two powdery mildew races were observed in Guadeloupe. Race 1 appears the first on late november. Race 2 appears later during the cultural season in relation with the increase of mean temperature. Trade winds permitted experiments on dissemination gradients providing informations on the relationship between severity of the disease and losses. The vicinity of diseased plants liberating numerous spores may reduce the yield even in healthy resistant plants. Susceptible varieties show a typical logistic development of the disease, contrasting with varieties of good level of adult resistance.
