Abstract

----- The empirical perception the farmers have about their environment can be usefully exploited for the systematic elaboration of a region knowledge. When the farmers are regrouped in professional organization as partners and interlocutors of research specialists, this formalization process of knowledge can be fastly and cheaply done. So, within some months and through training periods meeting farmers representing the various localities, an important information could be collected on the physical environment of a 30 000 Km2 region, in the South of Para State (Brazil). Until now, only soil and vegetation maps with a one millionth scale were available for this region. The results concerning the mumcipium (parish) of Sao Joao de Araguaia are presented as an example. This methodology, whish of course does not dispense from direct checking and complementary observations, showed its efficiency in a pioneer region where the occupation lengh is less than twenty years.
