Abstract

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abstract - In Benin as in most of the developing countries, farmers are experiencing the need to adapt their farming systems to the climate change by developing strategies which could sustain their livelihoods. This article aims at analysing the determinants of farmers’ decision to adapt to climate change from their perception of the aforesaid change. The case study took place in northern Benin, including 04 districts: Malanville, Banikoara, Bembéréké and Natitingou. A total 336 farmers producing maize was randomly sampled. Using a survey method on the respondents, data were collected about farmers’ socio-economic characteristics as well as their perceptions and adaptation to climate change. The Probit model of Heckman used reveals that the producers adapted to the climate change so as they perceived it. The experience in agriculture and the membership of an organisation of farmers have positive effects on perception as well as on the decision of adaptation. On the one hand, the possession of a secondary activity, the access to credit, and the contact with agricultural extension have positive incidences on the decision of adaptation. On the other hand, the number of household’s worker in agriculture and the land ownership do not have any significant impact on the farmers’ decision adaptation to climate change.
