A atividade petrolífera na América Latina consagrou, na primeira metade do século XX, a vitória política da opção estatal como a alternativa mais promissora para implementar projetos de modernização econômica. À luz de fatores selecionados, que configuraram as trajetórias das petrolíferas estatais YPF (Argentina), da PEMEX (México), da PDVSA (Venezuela) e da Petrobras (Brasil) exploram-se as variáveis que, nesses países, definiram a exaustão da articulação relativamente coerente entre as estruturas de governança petrolíferas estatais e o padrão desenvolvimentista por substituição de importações, conduzindo à abertura dos mercados petrolíferos e à transformação funcional e de identidade dessas quatro estruturas empresariais.
