Abstract

Waqf is a philanthropic institution which is unique to Islam. Since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon him) through to the Ottoman Empire, millions of awqaf were set up by Muslims in every corner of the world. Unfortunately, when the Muslim world was colonized, the institution of waqf became one of the prime targets of the colonizers. The recent past has seen a marked interest in the revival of the waqf institution through-out the Muslim world. One such step was the establishment of the International Centre For Waqf Research (ICWR) in November 2013, under the auspices of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The present book being reviewed is the first major presentation of the Centre.
