-- Taking railway stations for illustration, this paper describes the changing role of the focal points of mobility, and in particular of those transport hubs which have helped to shape city centres. Originally designed solely for transport purposes, railway stations have more recently taken on other functions and thus now contribute to meeting the multi-functional demands of our mobile society. For those railway stations which over recent decades have suffered a steady decline in their importance, this form of fusion between physical and virtual traffic can have a positively revitalising effect; in combination with its retail services and any other functions it may perform for the locality, a railway station can be reinforced as one of a city's main - and in many cases most imposing - infrastructure facilities. In addition to the primary effects of improvement to the transport system, this type of renaissance of railway stations generates important impulses for urban development.
