Abstract

Open innovation is a concept usually attributed to Henry Chesbrough, a professor at the University of California in Berkeley who established the Center for Open Innovation. Chesbrough defines Open innovation as “a paradigm that assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as the firms look to advance their technologies”. Although Henry Chesbrough was the first to coin the term in his book “Open Innovation: The new imperative for creating and profiting from technology” in 2003, the concept of open innovation existed long before he labeled and drew worldwide attention to the process.
