Abstract

When I first met Bill Cooper, he was one of the luminaries of Carnegie Mellon University: founding member and first president of The Institute for Management Science (TIMS), associate editor for Operations Research, and departmental editor of Management Science. The modern reader may not be aware of the unique position of Carnegie Mellon University in the academic world of the 1960s and 1970s. Over time, information theory — the IT revolution — has spread over the entire academic spectrum, but in those days Carnegie Mellon ruled the IT kingdom. The university had brought together a unique set of superstars, including polyhistor Herbert Simon, who held a chair in computer science and psychology. Seen today as the father of artificial intelligence, Herb's efforts matured into the construction of “Big Blue,” the IBM chess-playing machine that beat Kasparov in 1994…
