Abstract

The picture of Tinbergen that I have chosen as a frontispiece to this essay is the way I remember him when I saw him for the first time at the meeting of the Econometric Society in Uppsala, Sweden, in August 1954. He was then 51 years old — dynamic, slim, tall, with a bounce in his step, and with his characteristic crewcut hairdo. He was one of the leading economists of his generation, and I had read a good deal of his work. As a young graduate student in economics, I owned a copy of Tinbergen's famous study Statistical Testing of Business Cycles, two volumes [1939] commissioned by the League of Nations. The “Lundequistska” book shop in Uppsala was a treasure trove and I bought all important works in economics that I could put my hands on. Having an undergraduate background in mathematics and statistics, I was attracted to Tinbergen's approach to economics. In his inaugural address as professor at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Tinbergen had declared that he would pursue “statistics and mathematics in the service of business cycle research”…
