Abstract

In the 1970s and 80s, Taiwan, along with Korea, attracted the attention of the world as they followed Japan to economic success. However, since the late 1990s, as the Chinese economic and political influence increases, the world's attention has been increasingly focused away from Taiwan. Nevertheless, in recent years, scholars and institutes, both inside and outside Taiwan, have renewed their interest in Taiwan for a variety of reasons. Taiwan has a diverse culture, unique history, and ethnically mixed society. Its computer and information technology industry has grown significantly. It has undergone a democratic transformation from one of the world's worst dictatorship. Moreover, its precarious political, economic, social, and linguistic relations with China are of particular interest to sinologists and social scientists…
