Abstract

Patent strategy is about how a company uses patent protection to achieve different purposes in helping its business to succeed. Patent strategy should be well thought out before one files a patent. It is a business-driven area. In this chapter, we introduce the two common types of patent strategies: defensive and offensive strategy. We also discuss the roles patents play in a company's business strategy, with particular attention to intellectual property issues that may arise in participating in industry standards and in developing software using open sources.
