Abstract

For many years now the influence of the United States in Latin America has been decreasing, as the two have been drifting apart. Meanwhile, since the millennium China has been able to acquire a privileged standing in the region, becoming the main trade partner and lender of many of its countries. This requires some background, especially so because as late as the 1990s China was totally absent from the Latin American scene, while the United States saw this region as its backyard. Let us go back in time to properly frame this situation…
