Abstract

I thank the Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) for having invited me from India to discuss a study which is excellent. Although I did not get to read the full study, I have read the PowerPoint which was circulated. The content of the study is simply great. It provides annual indices and rankings of cost of living since 2005 for ordinary residents along with expatriates. The innovation of the study is that it is done for ordinary residents as well and not solely focusing on expatriates. This is important for multinational corporations (MNCs) wishing to know how much it will cost them to move to a location. The exercise was carried out for 103 countries including emerging market economies, cutting across continents. The study also provides annual indices and rankings for wages and purchasing power for ordinary residents since 2005. The publication is extremely timely and should be of immense policy help to policy-makers apart from corporations including MNCs and the academics…
