Abstract

Thirty years ago, the Internet was relatively new and was used almost exclusively by academics. Since then, it has revolutionised the way we live and has changed the types of activities we devote our time to. In the same way, sdustainability today is discussed almost exclusively by academics and politicians, with little participation from most people around the world, despite the important repercussions it will have on the way we live in 30 years’ time. But this time, the transition to sustainability will be very different: instead of being primarily technological, it will be much more social and institutional in character. Sustainability not only implies that we will not pollute more than the Earth can sustain but also implies good governance that promotes social inclusivity, cooperation between stakeholders in ensuring that we remain sustainable and increased awareness about the effects of our actions on our environment.
