Abstract

China has a population of more than 1.3 billion. Nearly 370 million people in China smoke; about one-third of all smokers in the world are in China. About 65 percent of those who do not smoke, mostly women and children, are exposed to harmful second-hand smoke (SHS). The negative health consequences of smoking include more than 1.2 million smoking-related deaths in China each year. If smoking rates in China do not decrease, the smoking death toll in China by the year 2030 is expected to be more than 2.2 million people per year. Cigarette smoking is a driving force in the rising rate of chronic diseases in China, a situation that puts increasing pressure on China's economy and its health care system…
