Abstract

A generic definition of electronic business (e-business) is the utilisation of information and communication technologies (ICT) in support of all business activities. The e-business evolves with the advancement of ICT, especially the World Wide Web (Web). At its early stage, the Web was accessed basically by means of wired connection, which restrained its functionality and application. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, described the access feature of a more powerful Web: “I would like to see more people reaching the Web from devices big and small, fixed and mobile.” The development of wireless technologies and mobile devices makes it possible that people reach the Web from any place and at any time. The business activities supported by wireless technologies and mobile devices are known as mobile business (m-business). The m-business extends the e-business and creates additional opportunities in business process. In this chapter, the evolution of the Web, wireless technologies and mobile technologies are described, and their effect on and application in m-business are discussed. The scenarios in the discussion show practical applications of the technologies and their driving forces leading to possible futures in business perspectives. Readers do not need to have detailed knowledge of the wireless technologies.
