Abstract

The name of Colin Clark, as a pioneer in quantitative economics and econometrics, was known to me from the very first studies that I took up in economics, more than 45 years ago. But one of the most impressive comments was in a periodic survey of economic and financial literature sent out by the Federal Reserve Board, where Colin Clark was described as a statistician who did creative work where other, more cautious, professionals feared to tread. I have often thought about that comment whenever I have felt the urge to work on a problem for which there was, of necessity, a weak and obscure data base. I have always aspired to be as creative as Colin Clark in distilling scholarly truths from poor and obscure data…
