Abstract

The intention of this chapter is not to chronicle the already well-documented Asian economic crisis nor to set out to examine the causes of the crisis, which would require a book in itself. The purpose here is to highlight its main features and characteristics so as to provide a context in which we view the IMF's response to it. Specifically, this chapter will attempt to capture the sudden loss of confidence in the 'tiger' economies, which became a key problem when the IMF was initially attempting to tackle by raising interest rates and imposing austerity measures…
