Abstract

This article provides a general review on the applications of damage mechanics and fracture mechanics in maintenance engineering with an emphasis on mechanical structures and systems. Most mechanical components take up a combination of static and dynamic loads. The theory of damage mechanics has been used for life assessment of components under static load and usually at elevated temperature. While a component is under dynamic, especially cyclic load, fracture mechanics has been commonly applied for failure prediction. With these theories, the service life of mechanical components can be estimated and hence maintenance plans could be formulated with consideration of cost and other induced impacts. Some issues on damage tolerance of safety will also be discussed.
