Web Course Technology: Creating Virtual Knowledge Spaces

Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of virtual knowledge space (k-space) and examines students' attitudes towards it in the context of an undergraduate IS course. The KM framework is used to guide the design of a conceptual model of the web-based k-space aimed at providing support for a variety of learning styles and processes. Data on students' perceptions of the importance of and their satisfaction with their k-space implementation were gathered by administering a survey questionnaire. Results indicate a clear preference for know-what (e.g., lecture notes and announcements) over know-how types (e.g., games and search engines) of knowledge management tools. Implications for online learning are discussed.
