Abstract

Yair Aharoni was a native-born Israeli sabra (cactus fruit that has a prickly exterior and a soft, sweet interior), typical of Israelis who pride themselves on their can-do attitude, frankness, and shameless audacity. Typical of a sabra, Yair, who was born in 1931, joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at the age of 19, serving between 1950 and 1956. He retired with the rank of Captain as head of the Air Force Statistical Branch (1951–1956). While serving in the IDF, Yair earned a Diploma (1955) and an MA from the Tel Aviv University School of Law and Economics (1958).
