Abstract

I had an unusual childhood. My father worked for the Singapore Foreign Ministry, which meant that we lived in many different countries and cultures. This has certainly shaped my identity. Moving around so much, I was always on the outside, never truly belonging. This may cause some disorientation and can prove challenging for someone young in particular. But it also meant I developed a strong inner world and books and stories provided consistency. I could hold onto the narratives I created, even if everything else in my world was changing…
