Abstract

Information Technology (IT) is no longer a support function. IT has progressed significantly to be at the helm of change and business growth. Organizations which align their business models with right technologies and processes realize maximum benefits. As the recent years have seen heavy investments through IT projects, it is imperative for IT project managers to understand the impact of their work beyond their scope. This chapter delves into the context in which IT projects function, elaborates on their evolution around business needs, illustrates the constraints that define success or failure of projects, and reviews the approaches used in handling them. The influencing factors of recent trends in IT projects including Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Automation, Managed Services, and Cloud Computing are reviewed. The key considerations in IT procurement, and how project financing, sponsorship, and governance are shaping IT projects, are explained. The concerns related to data and their mitigation options are emphasized. As operational consideration is critical to long-term success of IT projects, the approaches for simplification and smooth transition from projects to operations are reviewed. In summary, this chapter gives a big picture of the IT landscape and the broader mindset needed to drive change through IT projects.
