Agricultural TFP Under a Changing Climate: Evidence from High, Middle, and Low-Income Countries

Abstract

Climate change impacts are already visible in agriculture. In most parts of the world, exposure to climate extremes in the form of droughts, floods, heat spells, or storms has increased. This chapter aims to contribute to the literature by addressing climate change using a novel dataset for extreme weather events that include climate-related disasters and shocks such as floods, landslides, and wildfires as well as by examining temperature nonlinearities, and analyzes their impacts on agricultural TFP across country samples of varying income groups. The analysis is conducted for a total of 137 countries during the 1995–2015 period. The impacts of both climate change indicators are estimated to be negative only in the case of low- and middle-income countries. The relationship is proven to be robust to alternative specifications.
