Abstract

This chapter specifically addresses the topic of social innovation, with the aim of showing the direction that its research is heading. This was done by following the methodological guidelines of an integrative literature review. After a detailed analysis of the selected articles, a contextualization of the area was made. A remarkable point is the disagreement regarding the concept of social innovation that generates fragmentation and stagnation in the evolution of this research area. Next, we tried to make a prognosis on social innovation research, raising questions about health problems, sustainability, economy, urban and rural spaces, arts, and culture, and identifying some trends that could occur, mainly, postpandemic, in face of social problems to be solved. A list of items for future research and a framework are proposed as a result of the analyses. The need for research to investigate the pillars of social innovation (such as entrepreneurship, sustainability, and education), governance for social innovation, partnership formation processes, the process of social innovation, the use of technologies, and the dynamics of social innovation ecosystems, among others, is highlighted. It is expected that this study will be useful to assist in guiding social innovation initiatives, considering its potential to transform society.
