Abstract

This chapter aims to describe the contextual and theoretical elements about the Multilevel Governance (MultiGov) construct, in order to analyze the state of the art of the term. To accomplish it, a research study with a theoretical approach and descriptive purposes was carried out using the systematic literature review technique, followed by an integrative analysis of the studies found. As a contribution, this chapter describes the objectives, benefits, and challenges of MultiGov today and lists the theoretical elements proposed by the scientific literature: the approaches, assumptions, definitions, and guidelines for its configuration. In the end, it is possible to interrelate the contextual and theoretical elements and to highlight that the MultiGov model is interconnected to organizational knowledge, because, with the MultiGov configuration, where the sharing of authority and knowledge is required, the knowledge produced in one organizational level can influence processes at other levels, promoting the co-production of knowledge in the organization’s horizontal, vertical, and transversal networks.
