Abstract

Priceza, the Thai price comparison and e-commerce search engine, is a classic start-up. Founder Thanawat Malabuppa was studying computer science at the same time as the founders of fellow start-up, Wongnai. Like them, he had already started a company, but he and his two colleagues made the mistake of outsourcing development. The eventual solution was good, but in a fast-changing market, modification and updates were inevitable to adjust the face of the software to the public. Having outsourced IP development, they had a “pretty good solution” that could not be modified. The introduction of 4G telephony and better mobile devices sparked company growth, while the infusion of private equity funding helped professionalise operations as well as aid the company’s expansion into Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Others will follow.
