Abstract

The main goal of our study is to chart principals' leadership profile in secondary schools in Greece. The Competing Values Framework (CVF) was adopted to operationalise leadership roles performed by principals, since it provides a widely recognised diagnostic instrument to map their profiles. The field research was conducted by personal interviews with 124 secondary public school principals. Results indicates that Greek principals are inclined to perform more intensely the innovator, director, monitor and facilitator roles, neglecting the broker, producer, coordinator and mentor roles. This unbalanced leadership orientation reveals some weaknesses of principals' behaviour towards effectiveness, which they ought to address by developing the corresponding supporting managerial competences.
