Abstract

With the coming of knowledge economy, issues concerning intellectual capital (IC) are widely discussed and studied. In addition, enterprises around the world are faced with the need to measure their intellectual capital in order to better manage and utilize it. Confronted with such needs, this study aims to critically evaluate measurement indicators used for assessing intellectual capital, to identify important dimensions for intellectual capital and to provide implications for managers. Although a large amount of studies have discussed intellectual capital measurement indicators in existing literature, the effectiveness of them need to be carefully examined. This study serves for this purpose. The journal articles referred are selected from Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), Business Source Premier and ABI/INFORM COMPLETE from 1996 to present, the period when the literature of IC starts to burgeon. Three parts are included in this study. First, it defines the meaning and discusses the aspects of intellectual capital. Second, it critically reviews the measurement indicators proposed by scholars. Finally, according to the results, this study outlines the implication for managers and future researchers who intend to measure intellectual capital.
