Abstract

This chapter analyzes the relationships between network strategies, innovation strategies, and innovation and financial outputs. An empirical study on 44 top R&D spending bio-pharmaceutical companies is performed. The methodology is based on both patent and accounting data. A business network of joint development activities is built using social network analysis. Results show that each network strategy is related to different innovation strategies, confirming that social network analysis is an effective instrument to explain why firms enter into R&D agreements with partners and the linkage between such collaborations and the overall innovation strategy.
