Abstract

This chapter examines China’s internal evolution and changing international role in recent decades, advocating a more nuanced approach to understanding contemporary China, not as a monolithic entity but rather as a complex array of interests and agents that are reflected in a diversity of practices. According to one expert on China, Martin Jacques, there is no unified Chinese ‘African policy’ and no unified ‘state’ that Chinese companies represent (2012)…
