Abstract

The vast majority of all firms are small in size. However, there is nothing small in their influence on the regional and national economies. These firms create substantial value to the economy in terms of employment, job creation and value added. For that reason, the abilities of these firms to innovate are extremely important not only for strengthening their competitiveness but also because they through the linkages and knowledge spillovers with other firms influence the entire economy [European Commission, 2012a].
