Abstract

In this chapter we present the command iop written for Stata, which computes indices of inequality of opportunity for binary variables. The index indicates to what extent a certain outcome (e.g. access to schooling) depends on circumstances of the person (e.g. gender or ethnicity). The command proposes two types of decompositions allowing the user to understand the sources of inequality of opportunity better. The first decomposition identifies the main circumstances generating inequality of opportunity and the second decomposition proposes to compare two groups and to analyze whether the differences in inequality of opportunity are due to the composition of circumstances or to their influence on the outcome. In the end of the chapter we illustrate the command using data from Mexico. The command iop is developed further and will always be available on RePEc.
