Abstract

The travel behavior surveys are not generally required by the decision-makers in Russian cities. However, the academic community had initiated the survey which was conducted in 2014 and became the first comprehensive household travel behavior survey in Russia. This allowed stepping aside from the applied nature of the majority of the similar surveys and to concentrate on the sociological characteristics of mobility. The survey was largely an experimental one as some methods employed had unlikely been used before. Even though the project was considered to be successful and some results turned out to be surprising. For example, no significant difference has been revealed between the drivers’ travel patterns and public transport users’ travel behavior. The results of the survey enable the comparison of mobility patterns in Russian cities and abroad, which can be interesting both for Russian and international readers as there has been no such analysis before.
