Abstract

Two great antitheses dominate the political thought of all time: anarchy versus unity and oppression versus freedom (Bobbio, Thomas Hobbes and the Natural Law Tradition, p. 29, 1909/1993). At no time in English history was the intellectual struggle between the two antitheses more pronounced, or more important for the future of the country.
