Abstract

The first chapter, the introduction, explains the motivation and structure of the study and discusses definitions and borders of Central Asia (CA), its natural environment, and salient traits of the Silk Road (SR). CA is defined as comprising the territory of the five former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (the Kyrgyz Republic), Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as of the autonomous Chinese region of Xinjiang Uighur. Depending on historic circumstances, the territory dealt with may at times also include adjacent areas. CA is geographically in large parts made up of a steppe belt and an oasis belt. The Silk Road is defined as a historic network of overland trade routes running through CA that provided commercial, technological, and cultural exchange between Europe, CA, India, and China.
