Abstract

The threat of emerging powers grew day by day, and during the final century of the Ming Dynasty, China had to engage in four large-scale wars against formidable adversaries. These wars were the Border War between China and Myanmar, the Wars of China and Korea against Japan, the Wars between the Ming and the Later Jin/Qing Dynasties in Liaodong, and the War between China and the Netherlands in the Taiwan Strait. Each of these wars was among the largest in the world at that time and had profound implications for global history. Although the four wars demonstrated the effectiveness of the military reform movement in the late Ming Dynasty, it did not save the Ming Dynasty in the end due to the influence of political corruption and factional struggles within the army, and the reform achievements were partly inherited by the later Qing Dynasty.
