The Big Shuffle: The East Asian World in the Era of Early Economic Globalization

Abstract

Before the Ming Dynasty, several major cultural spheres had taken shape in the East Asian World. However, in the fifteenth century, significant changes occurred. Islam once again expanded eastward, but its progress was impeded by the Buddhist cultural sphere that had developed in the Indochinese Peninsula. Confucianism dominated the countries of East Asia, while Christianity spread extensively across the globe alongside European overseas expansion. Missionaries of Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity often traveled together with merchants, and as trade flourished, their teachings spread far and wide. The expansion of the Confucian cultural sphere, on the other hand, was closely linked to the economic integration brought about by commercialization within the relevant countries.
