Abstract

Based on a review of existing studies, this chapter presents three research gaps that have not been fully explored. The first research gap is the intermittent nature of product development activities. The second research gap is the complexity of adaptation activities for integral products. The third research gap is the effects and objectives of adaptation activities. After reviewing existing studies, the author derives two analytical issues of this study. Analytical issue 1 discusses the relationship between product performance and adaptation activities during product development. Analytical issue 2 examines effective development patterns in products and industries characterized by continuous development activities from four perspectives: external information and products as adaptation targets, development flexibility and collaboration among departments (especially in the development and operation) as the adaptation entities.
